An 89-year-old Fairfield man was struck by a car and injured while crossing Burroughs Road at Black Rock Turnpike Saturday morning.

Police said the man, who was celebrating his birthday by walking to McDonald’s for breakfast, was crossing the intersection at around 9:45 when a car hit him and, without stopping, continued down Burroughs Road.

Another driver in the area witnessed the accident and followed the car, honking her horn until the driver eventually stopped.

The driver who allegedly struck the man then returned to the scene and told police she thought she had hit the curb, not a person.

The victim suffered a broken leg and injuries to his pelvis, shoulder and lower back, and was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for treatment.

Police said the man was scheduled to have surgery on his fractured leg Monday morning, Dec. 8.

The matter remains under investigation.
