On Tuesday, Nov. 18, over 80 Fairfield fathers came to Roger Sherman Elementary School to hear Bobby Valentine, former manager of the Mets and Red Sox, and current athletic director at Sacred Heart University, speak about mentoring children and building their confidence.

Valentine was the featured speaker at a kick-off event for a new area program called Watch D.O.G.S., which encourages fathers and father figures to volunteer one day a year in a school activity. The program provides an opportunity for fathers to become engaged in their child’s school experience and have an impact on the school community.

Activities may include helping during morning drop-off, assisting the kids during lunch, getting involved at recess, and helping small groups of students in the classroom on projects, reading or spelling.

Valentine discussed his experiences as a coach and what he has learned about how to motivate and encourage people to be their best.

Team leaders Lucas Swineford, Terry Davis and Elisabeth Schneider said turnout exceeded their expectations, with fathers lined up three people deep, waiting to sign their names to a date on the school calendar.

The Colony Grill donated pizzas, The Pantry donated pastries, Shake Shack donated custard, and Stop and Shop and Costco donated beverages for the event.

Watch D.O.G.S. is an educational initiative of the National Center For Fathering in 5,000 schools in 46 states. The program goal is to provide positive role models demonstrating the importance of education and to provide extra sets of eyes and ears to enhance school security and reduce bullying.
