Thanksgiving weekend highway accidents up over last year


State police report that the additional troops patrolling state roads during the holiday “weekend,” from midnight Tuesday through midnight Sunday, resulted in additional violations from last year in almost all categories tracked. Only for speeding did tickets go down from the same period last year. In 2013, state police made 1,134 speeding arrests; this year, they made 1,100.

According to a press release issued Monday by the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, during this year’s holiday period, there were 52 violations for operating under the influence; 314 arrests for failure to wear a seat belt; 3,538 arrests for hazardous moving violations; and 934 accidents investigated, 97 of them with injuries.

There was one highway fatality reported, in Norwalk. Last year’s holiday period also saw one fatality.
