A warrant was issued for Vargas’ arrest after an employee of the Turnpike Spirit Shop, on Black Rock Turnpike, spotted him in the store on Oct. 17. The employee thought Vargas was the same man caught on the store’s surveillance video shoplifting expensive bottles of liquor and hiding them in his shorts on Sept. 20.

The video from Sept. 20 showed the man taking a bottle of Bollinger champagne, valued at $399.99, and a bottle of Tattinger champagne worth $149.98.

The employee called police and engaged Vargas in conversation to stall him until they arrived.

After being shown the September surveillance footage, Vargas admitted to the thefts. Police searched his car and found a bottle of vintage Dom Perignon and a six-pack of beer, both of which were cold to the touch. Vargas reportedly first said he bought the liquor in Norwalk, then said he bought it a long time ago, but had just taken it out of his refrigerator.

Police determined that the alcohol in Vargas’ car came from Al’s Warehouse, on Kings Highway. Surveillance footage at Al’s showed Vargas taking the liquor in question without paying for it.

Vargas was on probation at the time of the alleged thefts and reportedly has an extensive criminal history in several states.

He was arrested on the warrant after a traffic stop by a state trooper, and was released on a promise to appear in court December 8.
