Siblings lead way at Hoop Shoot

A rare occurrence evolved in the local phase of the Elks’ National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest held Sunday, Nov. 16, at Fairfield Ludlowe High School — two of the six winners ended up as a brother-sister show.
Shooting in the girls’ 10-11 age group, Clare Edminster edged out prior champion Marisa Homa to take the trophy, while her brother Owen gathered the honors with the top boys’ score of 20 of 25 free throws in the 12-13 division, winning over last year’s state finalist Christian Homa.
Other winners included age 8-9 Hazel Hendler and George Cipollaro, who edged his brother in a tiebreaker for first place.
The 10-11 boys’ crown was won by Samuel Frank, while Rory Gill took the prize in the girls’ 12-13 bracket with the top girls’ score of 19 of 25.
All six winners now advance to the district finals to be hosted by the Fairfield Elks Lodge on Sunday, Jan. 11, at  9:30 a.m. at Fairfield Warde High School.
The public is invited to attend to watch the locals compete against their counterparts from eight other Elk Lodges in the district with a chance of advancing to state finals.
The road then leads the winners to Augusta, Maine, where New England champs are crowned for entry into the National finals held in Springfield (Mass.) in April.
