Warde-Staples declared FCIAC co-champions

The “what if” factor couldn’t offset the effort put on the field when the Fairfield Warde and Staples of Westport girls soccer teams left the pitch with a 1-1 draw and were declared FCIAC co-champions in Norwalk on Wednesday.
“It was a tough way to end it,” Warde coach Tom Cunningham said of not continuing or going to penalty kicks. “But they way the teams were playing we could have went on for hours. We are FCIAC champions and the girls should be proud.”
Warde’s Anna Glovin headed home a corner kick from Claire Pullen at the 36:57 mark of the first half to give the Mustangs the lead.
“It was a great ball by Claire and Anna was on the backside,” Cunningham said. “We’ve been talking all season about getting on the end of those corners and she put it in the back of the net.”
Staples tied the game when Lauren Garcia tucked a shot into the upper right side of the net with 4:40 remaining in regulation.
“It was a wonder strike; you save your best goal for the final like that,” Staples coach Barry Beattie said. “As soon as it left her feet I was celebrating; I had the perfect view.
“I thought both teams were excellent. I know both teams were leaving the field feeling weird. It was probably the fair result; neither team deserved to lose.”
