It took a well-placed kick by Lorin Tobey to turn a confusing set piece into Fairfield Ludlowe’s first FCIAC boys soccer championship.
“Coach was calling `4’ which is Mike McArdle on the wall and I pass it to him and he turns in, but coach had Nick Demaso run over the ball and by him adding that it ruined the play with Mike,” said Tobey, a senior tri-captain.
“So, I just took my time and I reset and I just hit it. It was amazing. For my teammates, for my coach. He has waited 11 years for this and we got it for him.”
Falcon coach Kevin O’Hara’s Falcons completed their FCIAC season with a 16-0-3 record, including three straight shutouts in the FCIAC tournament, with the 1-0 victory at Norwalk High on Wednesday night.
Tobey’s goal from 25 yards out scraped just under the crossbar and over the fingers of Greenwich High keeper Jose Romero with 37:23 remaining and gave Ludlowe the 1-0 victory over the defending champions.
Fred Meagher had seven saves to blank the Cardinals, including a scintillating stop in the 69th minute.
“After that save I looked up at the clock and there was ten minutes left,” Meagher said. “I just went into a zone after that. Everyone has played so well this whole season. It’s important to communicate and we do that all over the field.”
Alec Georgiadis, Tripp McGarrie, Richie Bellucci and Tobey’s primary task was walling off Meagher from Greenwich striker Nick Bartels.
“They are a good side. They are athletic, they are big and strong everywhere and you see he has some depth there,” Greenwich coach Kurt Putnam said. “It is not wonder they have the record they got. They hit a fantastic free kick and they are a good side.”
