Red Thunder U12 girls to play for Connecticut Cup title

The Fairfield United Red Thunder U-12 girls soccer team defeated Orange, 3-1 in overtime, in front of a hometown crowd at Tomlinson field to capture  a spot in the final for the Connecticut Cup on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Farmington Sport Arena (11 Executive Drive, Farmington).
Orange challenged first with a hard shot on goal that was stopped by a spectacular diving save by Fairfield goalie Emerson Lyons.
The score remained tied until early in the second half when Montana Osinski from Fairfield scored off a deflection  of a hard shot from Jillian Motkin.
Fairfield remained in the lead until Orange scored with less than one minute left to tie the game.
There were no additional goals until the second overtime period, when Emily Johnson put one past the Orange’s goalkeeper after receiving a corner kick from Lena Gunn.
Later in the second overtime, Suzanna Weber was taken down in Orange’s goalie box, which resulted in a penalty kick. Gunn drove the  kick into the net to give the Red Thunder a 3-1 win.
The Connecticut Cup is a season-long single-elimination tournament comprised of 38 teams from around the state at the girls U12 level.
