Fairfield would be fortunate to have McCarthy Vahey in office

To the Editor:

I urge you to support Cristin McCarthy Vahey for state representative because she has the experience, ideas, intellectual power and down-to-earth perspective we need in Hartford.

You can judge candidates in part by what they say, but more importantly, by their record.

As a Fairfield legislator for six years and selectman for the past two, Cristin has consistently voted to fund education programs our children need for college and beyond. She has resisted cutting vital funds for paving and repairing our roads.

She has not only voted to fund an expanded program for senior and disabled tax relief, she has sought practical ways to help seniors like a neighborhood snow removal program. She has worked hard to keep our taxes reasonable, while meeting the real, everyday needs of the 60,000 men, women and children in our town.

I met Cristin when I joined the RTM for District 5 in 2007. As an elected official, no matter how fierce the debate, she is respectful of her colleagues in both parties, earning their respect and making her an effective leader. I have watched her reconcile divergent viewpoints, study voluminous data, weigh outcomes. I admire and respect her thoroughness and fairness.

I have also walked the streets of my district as a candidate with her, and witnessed her authentic connection with the diverse people of our town. We are fortunate to have Cristin McCarthy Vahey in Fairfield, and will be fortunate to have her as a state representative.
