Resident completes mountaineering course

Nicholas Smith, 26, of Fairfield recently completed a four-week wilderness expedition traveling by foot in Alaska with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).

This course set out from Palmer, Alaska with 13 students and four instructors who are experts in the field. For 28 days, Smith and his coursemates backpacked among peaks and snow-covered glaciers. Instructors taught curriculum focusing on mountaineering skills development, avalanche safety skills and glacier travel.

This course culminated with a three-night, 24-mile independent student expedition in the Clearwater Mountains. Over four weeks in the mountains, Smith and his coursemates traveled 112 miles and gained 15,000 feet of elevation.
