Town needs to stop raising taxes

To the Editor:

Fairfield’s elected Town Planning and Zoning Commission doubles as the state sanctioned Coastal Site Plan Agency here in the town. As such, the TPZ ought to review and approve any proposed changes Fairfield Town Hall now wants to make to raise and relocate the crumbling Penfield Pavillion #1.

And this time around, the Republican-dominated TPZ/CSPA needs to get it right instead of just rubber stamping whatever comes out of Fairfield Town Hall like it did last time around.

As most everybody who wants to notice  has noticed, Penfield 1 was the only building put up in the beach area over the last 15 years not to survive Storm Sandy in the fall of 2012. And as most everybody who wants to notice,  noticed right after Sandy hit.

While FEMA was marking the building with a boxed “X” in big red paint, designating it structurally unsound and uninhabitable, Fairfield Town Hall was decreeing that the damage was only minor and that the building would be back in service before the first day of winter was out.

Fairfield Town Hall was in denial  about the situation then and it looks like it is still in denial. Fairfield Town Hall has even whitewashed over the boxed “X” anywhere it could.

Better yet, the Republican-led Board of Finance might want to be the good elephants in the room and remember its 2013 campaign signs and slogan: “Stop Raising Taxes, Vote Republican.”

The BOF should save the TPZ/CSPA some trouble and stop this thing in its bureaucratic tracks. Fairfield Town Hall wants to spend another $5 million to raise and relocate this white elephant, which few around town seem to want to see saved. Rest assured, the best case $200,000 in annual gross revenue won’t pay the bill — only higher taxes will do that.

Be Republican, top raising taxes. Somebody, please.
