RLMS hosts charity Wiffle ball tournament Saturday

Fairfield resident Craig Kimball was a little disappointed when his teen-aged son told him the highlight of their recent summer trip was a cousin’s Wiffle ball tournament. Craig said he thought the excursions he carefully planned to kayak and tour Bar Harbor and other sites should have made at least as great an impression.

But then he got an idea.

When Kimball and his son, Keith, returned home, they researched Wiffle ball, and discovered the backyard mainstay was invented in Fairfield in 1953.

“Once I decided to register a tournament with the Wiffle company, I corresponded through emails with David J. Mullany, owner of Wiffle Ball, Inc., in Shelton,” Kimball said.

“David told me his father and grandfather designed the Wiffle ball at the kitchen table of their home on Edge Hill Road here in Fairfield,” Kimball said. “That’s when the bulb went off, what would be better than to bring Wiffle Ball back home where it all started, especially on our 375th anniversary?”

With the help of First Selectman Michael Tetreau and Sue Kiraly from the town’s Department of Parks and Recreation, Kimball said he quickly organized a preliminary tournament to take place Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Roger Ludlowe Middle School field, with teams made up of town police officers, firefighters and Town Hall and public works employees, all playing to benefit the Fairfield fire and police benevolent funds.

T-shirts will be on sale at the tournament, and the event will include a silent auction for items such as a free gym membership and sports memorabilia, including signed photographs of Jets, Patriots and Red Sox players.

The tournament kicks off with town Probate Court employee Courtney Baranyai singing the “Star Spangled Banner” at 10 a.m. For more information, visit the tournament’s Facebook page at Fairfield Wiffle, or fairfieldwiffle.com.
