Pee wee gridders earn win in battle of unbeatens

The Fairfield Giants Pee Wee Pop Warner football team improved to 4-0, posting its third shutout with a 6-0 victory over the previously undefeated Pomperaug Warriors.
The game was billed to be an ebb push and pull battle, and that it was. Neither team would give up much on the defensive side. With shutdown pass defense and stuff run defense, both team played with heart and passion.
After ending the first half in a scoreless tie, the Giants began the second half determined.
After receiving the kickoff, the Pomperaug offense began a march to midfield, until Fairfield’s Peter Strang and Charlie Wilcox stuffed a counter run play in the backfield, jarring the the football loose.
With the ball bouncing off the turf, defensive tackle Anthony Bambus rocketed through two defenders to recover the loose ball, giving the Giants the momentum they needed.
With great off tackle blocking by tight ends Grady Bartlett and John Reynolds, the Giants offense led by quarterback Nick Morris and running back Mike Innaimo, marched down to the Warrior 5-yard line.
Here, Innaimo took a counter into the end zone for the only score of the game. Fairfield would drive down to the Pomperaug 1-yard line late in the final period, where they opted to take a knee and run out the lock sealing the victory.
Game standouts include Robert D’elia, Hank Hackett, Joey Sangiullo, Finn Donelan and Trevor Knisley.
Fairfield takes on the the undefeated New Haven Steelers next weekend at Sullivan Field.
