Warde football eyeing next step forward

Brandon Bisack will quarterback Fairfield Warde in its season opener with Foran High.

Brandon Bisack spoke directly for the Fairfield Warde football team when the senior quarterback was asked how the preseason buzz of high expectations would effect the Mustangs.
“We are doing what we need to do every day in practice,” said Bisack, head coach Duncan DellaVolpe’s 6-5, 190-pound signal-caller.
“What happens on Friday night happens on Friday night, that is what we are concerned with and I’ll take a clear mind into every game.”
Bisack, Wade Tetreau, T.J. Gallagher, Ryan Brown and Jack Whiting are team captains, and each is zoned in on helping Warde turn around it’s 4-7 record from a year ago.
“We are a quicker team and we’ll try to use that speed, and we have some skill guys with experience and we’ll try to use that,” said DellaVolpe, now in his sixth season.
“We have a mixed group with younger players and we need the two groups to buy in together.”
Bisack threw for 1,341 yards and five scores as a junior and worked on improving his skills in the offseason.
“I’m much better moving within the pocket and going through my reads to find receivers,” he said.
“Still, I’m going to run the ball if it’s there and keep defenses on their heels. They (coaches) tell me to slide (to avoid a tackle), but if there are more yards (to be gained), I want to get them.
“Our offensive line has really improved and keep on getting better every day as a group. I have to do my job and trust that they’ll be there for me.”
Tetreau will start at guard on offense and linebacker on defense.
“We’ve been coming together every day we put on the pads,” he said.
“We know teams are going to try to disrupt Brandon and have been working on blitz pickup. We’re not as big up front as last year, but we are quicker.”
Gallagher is the featured back.
“I pride myself on being able to catch the ball out of the backfield and can pick up the blitz as well as run the ball,” said Gallagher, who ran for 761 yards and three scores as a junior.
“The key to blocking the blitz package is understanding (through film work and practice) where it will be coming from.
“This is our year. We’ve been playing together since third grade with the Wildcats. Our goal is to win eight games and hopefully not playing our last game on Thanksgiving.”
Brown is Bisack’s top target from a year ago, when he had 35 receptions for 537 yards and five touchdowns.
“This summer has been a blast,” he said.
“We got to compete well against FCIAC teams in the passing league and all the workouts are paying off,” he said.
“Brandon is a great quarterback and does a great job finding who ever is open.
“Our timing has been getting better every practice.
“I worked to gain some weight, but really I wanted to get faster so I could make more plays over the top (of the defense).”
Whiting is a cornerback on defense and will see time on offense catching passes out of the slot position.
“Last year as a secondary, we simply got beat a whole lot more times than we should have,” he said.
“We’ve been working hard on understanding the concepts and keeping the ball in font of us.
“It is a veteran secondary as three guys started every game unless they were injured and all four of us have played significant time.
“The fact that we’ve been through the good and the bad has made the team closer. I think that camaraderie will help us this season.”
Warde opens its season at Tetreau-Davis Field when Foran High from Milford visits tonight at 7.
“The first game is huge for us,” DellaVolpe said of the SCC-FCIAC Football Challenge contest with the Lions (8-3).
“We’ve had our success in the offseason and now we know (offensive-minded Foran coach) Jeff Bevino is going to throw it all out there.
“It’s going to come down to technique and assignments in the secondary and how we maintain our mental focus.”
