Man charged with DUI for second time this month

A local man has been charged with driving while intoxicated for the second time this month after his second accident in as many weeks.

Jeffrey Nielsen, 44, of French Street, was arrested Sept. 20 at 7:46 p.m. after his car left South Street.

Police said the car was headed north when it struck a mailbox, continued north across the road into the driveway at 100 South St., and proceeded into the yard at 74 South St., where the car struck bushes and a tree.

The first officer to arrive reported finding Nielsen out of the vehicle and sitting on the side of the road. Nielsen was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center with a possible neck injury.

Officers said Nielsen displayed signs of intoxication, but refused blood and urine tests at the hospital.

Officers also said they recognized him from a Sept. 7 crash on River Street, in which he was allegedly intoxicated while driving a car that knocked over a utility pole at 9:10 p.m.

Nielsen was charged with driving while intoxicated and failure to drive right in the Sept. 20 crash, and was released on a promise to appear in court Oct. 1.

He also has a DUI charge pending from the Sept. 7 crash.
