Jesuits win grid opener

Fairfield Prep opened its season with a 47-0 victory over Wilbur Cross of New Haven in a Southern Connecticut Conference match up on Friday afternoon.
Interceptions by Chris Pruden and Matt Montano, along with Montano’s fumble recovery, led directly to first-half touchdowns for coach Tom Shea’s Jesuits, who took a 28-0 lead into intermission.
Prep’s defense limited the Governors to minus three yards on their first five possessions, and 19 yards overall in the first half.
Chris Colger scored on an eight-yard run three plays after Pruden’s interception for a 6-0 Jesuit lead midway through the first quarter.
John Meyers centered the offensive line of guards Tim Peterson, Dakota Mann, and tackles Michael Ruther and Anthony Deleo, with Andrew Ostrosky the primary tight end.
Chris Moten’s seven-yard touchdown run came on Prep’s third play from scrimmage after Montano recovered a fumble forced by Nick Crowle on the Wilbur Cross 20-yard line.
Prep scored two times late in the second quarter.
Quarterback Strecker Backe snuck over from one-yard out with 39 seconds remaining in the half to cap a three-play 25-yard drive that came after Pruden’s ankle tackle stopped the Governor’s Ysaan Frazier short on a fake punt attempt.
After the kickoff, Cross quarterback Jaylin Fuller went to the air and Montani intercepted the ball on the Governor’s 39-yard line.
Backe stepped back and hit John Delisanti in stride on a post pattern, and the sophomore made a finger-tip catch before racing 61 yards to paydirt.
Dillon Ryan ran for the two-point conversion with 23 seconds left in the half.
Ryan’s six-yard scoring run at the 10:56 mark of the third period extended the Prep lead to 34-0.
Moten’s 37-yard run to paydirt came just over a minute later.
