Police Union awards scholarships

The board of directors for the fledgling Fairfield Police Union Scholarship Award has named the inaugural recipients of the award. The board decided on four students, who were introduced at a ceremony held last week at Fairfield police headquarters: Tyler Caruso of Stratford; Christopher Bodnar of Trumbull; Erin Broderick of Fairfield; and Christopher Rubis of Monroe.

Caruso, the son of Det. Fred Caruso, will be attending Southern Connecticut State University and majoring in business.

Bodnar, the son of Officer James Bodnar, plans to attend Penn State University, where he will also major in business.

Rubis, whose father is Officer Chris Rubis, is attending the University of Rhode Island.

Broderick, the daughter of Fairfield police union president Lt. Keith Broderick, will be attending Keene State University in New Hampshire as an education major.

The scholarship fund was designed to be awarded to the child of a current Fairfield police officer and is separate from the scholarship funded by the union through the Fairfield High School Scholarship Foundation.

Although the original plan for the first year was to award one $500 scholarship, Broderick explained that the plan changed as time marched on.

“This year’s award was supposed to be $500, but because of the generosity of some anonymous donors, we were able to give all four applicants who applied a $500 award.” Broderick said. “It’s a very exciting event for all of us.”

The board members of the scholarship fund are Broderick, Fairfield police union vice-president Sergeant Mike Paris, Police Chief Gary MacNamara, Fairfield residents Joan and Dennis Poster, and Probate Judge Dan Caruso.

“This is just the beginning,” Broderick added. “We have a financial plan in place that will ensure the Fairfield Police Union Scholarship Award lasts long into the future.”

Broderick added that the fund is always looking for donations and fundraising ideas and welcomes suggestions and input from town residents.
