Register by next week to vote in August primaries

Election 2014 ButtonsConnecticut Secretary of State Denise Merrill sent out a reminder today that August 7 is the deadline for online and mail-in registration for voting in the state’s August 12 primary elections. If you miss that deadline, not to worry — you can still register in person in town offices until Monday, August 11, at noon.

If you miss that, you won’t be allowed to vote in the primaries, but you can vote in November’s general elections by registering online or by mail by October 21 and in person by October 28. And if you miss that, well … better luck next year.

According to the Secretary of State, Connecticut will see 30 primaries in August, including elections for Republican candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and state comptroller. In addition, in Fairfield, Democratic candidates for state representative will appear on the ballot in District 133.

“This year’s primaries are right around the corner,” Merrill said. “I want to make sure all eligible voters can make their voices heard and choose candidates for November’s general election … . Only registered Democrats and Republicans can vote, so if you are unaffiliated, you must enroll with a major party by Monday, August 11 at noon in order to cast a primary ballot.”

Absentee ballots for the primary can be downloaded from the secretary of state’s website, www.sots.ct.gov/vote, and will be counted as long as town clerks receive them by 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 12, according to Merrill.
