Town OK's Fairfield Theatre Company expansion

The Board of Selectmen gave the go-ahead to Fairfield Theatre Company’s (FTC’s) plan to open an additional theater in a warehouse adjoining the FTC space at 70 Sanford Street. FTC Executive Director John Reid told selectmen at their June 16 meeting that the company expects to spend $1.2 to $1.4 million in improvements to the town-owned building, which will include a removable stage and a mezzanine, and come at no cost to the town.

Architect Michael Smith volunteered his services for the project’s design, and the state awarded FTC a $100,000 grant for fire suppression in the new theater.

According to Reid, the FTC stages about 175 shows per year in its current space, which is also owned by the town. Reid said these shows draw in 40,000 patrons and contribute $48,000 to town coffers, a figure he told selectmen he expects to double over the next three years.

In comments to the Sun, Reid explained that in lieu of rent, the town gets a per-ticket fee for productions and a percentage of private rental fees for the facility. Reid said he expects the renovation to take about 12 months, and that the new theater, with a seating capacity of 640, would enable the FTC to host artists whose audiences are too large to fit in the 225-seat theater it has now.

At the selectmen’s meeting, Reid described FTC’s expansion of programming during the 10 years it has operated downtown. The FTC currently has a theater and art gallery and hosts concerts, fund raisers, a film series and a Saturday morning program for underserved area kids.

First Selectman Michael Tetreau called the planned expansion “a tremendous investment that shows FTC’s commitment to the downtown area.”
