Truck flips on Post Road in Southport

Fairfield firefighters prevent spill after early morning crash

Firefighters and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection prevented a diesel spill after an accident early Wednesday morning that left a tandem FedEx tractor trailer on its side in Southport.

The crash occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. in front of Dunkin’ Donuts, 3355 Post Road.

Fairfield firefighters said they found the cab and front trailer of the truck on the driver’s side, and a small SUV stopped in the center of the roadway. All of the occupants were out of their vehicles, Asst. Chief George Gomola said.

After the driver of the truck and two women who were in the SUV refused medical treatment, firefighters focused on containing 80 gallons of diesel fuel and several gallons of motor oil that could have leaked into a storm drain just 10 feet from the truck. The drain led to Southport Harbor, Gomola said.

Firefighters worked with DEEP agents, Bud’s Wrecker Service and a cleanup contractor to upright the truck, Gomola said.

No firefighters or recovery workers were injured.

The last fire unit left the scene shortly before 6 a.m.
