Forum focused on preventing fraud and abuse

State Rep. Tony Hwang (R-134) and Rep. Brenda Kupchick (R-132) co-hosted a collaborative informational forum on Senior Fraud and Abuse Prevention June 7 with the AARP, the Jewish Senior Services Center for Elder Abuse Prevention and the Fairfield Police Department.

The forum at the Fairfield Senior Center was held to raise awareness and inform the public of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 14. Laura Snow of the Jewish Senior Services Center for Elder Abuse Prevention, Fairfield Police Chief Gary MacNamara and Erica Michalowski, a fraud prevention expert from AARP, made presentations.

Hwang and Kupchick discussed legislation passed during the last two years addressing abuse or fraud perpetrated on seniors in Connecticut, including electric rate protection, safeguards on price gouging during storms, and adding text messages to the state’s Do Not Call List.

“This forum is the exact kind of collaborative teamwork we need to educate Fairfield seniors on senior fraud and abuse prevention,” MacNamara said.
