The Fairfield American Little League All-Stars scored five times in the top of the sixth inning to defeat Westport, 8-3, in the District 2 final at Unity Field on Saturday, July 12.
Jamie Flink’s three-run home run broke a 3-3 tie in the decisive sixth, before tournament most valuable player Vince Camera added a line-drive, two-run shot to right field to provide the insurance runs.
“The boys battled back… We told them to stay calm, stay confident, let the ball travel and put a good swing on it,” Fairfield American manager Mike Steed said.
Prior to that, Westport’s Adam Petro belted a two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to forge the 3-3 deadlock.
“He swung at a pretty good pitch,” Steed said. “[Americans starter P.J. Egan] left it over the plate. Petro’s been crushing the ball all tournament. He’s a great player… Thankfully it wasn’t the go-ahead run, just the tying run.”
Ian Bentley went 4-for-4 for Fairfield American, driving in their first three runs via a second-inning double, a third-inning two-out infield single and a solo home run with two outs in the fifth.
John Reynolds and Brian Kiremidjian added two hits and one run scored apiece for Fairfield American.
Egan won the game on the mound for the Americans, firing a complete-game five-hitter and striking out three.
He also induced 14 groundball outs, the result of some effective wildness early on.
“It was his best performance thus far of the tournament,” Steed said. “He was a little nervous at first and not finding the zone.
“I think actually the fact he was a little wild helped out a little bit. A couple kids were swinging at some bad pitches because they were expecting them to be right around the zone… Great performance.”
Will Eichhorn took the loss for Westport, scattering 11 hits and allowing six runs — four of them earned — before reliever Jimmy Trinkle surrendered the two-run home run to Camera.
“They hit a couple of home runs and that was about it,” Westport manager Andy Thompson said. “I think our boys played as well as I could’ve asked them to and Fairfield played a little bit better today.”
Fairfield American advanced to the Division 1 Section 1 playoffs, where it will face the winner between District I champions Norwalk and District IV winner Annex of New Haven at Roche Field in Orange.
The Americans opened the scoring on Saturday in the top of the second inning.
Camera reached on an error, moved up on Egan’s single to left and scored when Bentley doubled to deep right field.
Westport put a pair of runners aboard with one out in the bottom of the frame, but Camera, the catcher, caught Nick Rossi attempting to steal second base.
Egan then got pinch hitter Trinkle to ground back to the mound to strand Blake Lawrence, who singled to start the inning, at third.
Bentley’s infield single drove in Flink in the top of the third to double the locals’ lead, before Westport cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth.
Eichhorn doubled with one out, then scored when pinch hitter Chris Veneruso punched a two-out single to right field. Bentley’s solo home run in the top of the fifth made it 3-1, with Petro’s two-run salvo in the home half of the frame tying it up.
Following the five-run, sixth-inning burst, Egan notched a pair of strikeouts sandwiched around a fine defensive play by Jack Steed at second base. Steed ranged over and made the stop, flipping to shortstop Brian Howell to force out Lawrence — who had reached via error.
