Warde defeats Trumbull to advance to baseball semis

The Fairfield Warde baseball team used a four-run, first-inning outburst, combining it with the complete-game pitching performance by Reese Maniscalco and a solid defense that turned two double plays, to defeat Trumbull High 5-1 and advance to the semifinal round of the Class LL baseball tournament on Friday afternoon in Trumbull. The 15th-seed Mustangs improved to 18-8 and will meet No. 3 Southington (20-3) on Tuesday, June 10, at 3:30 p.m. at Muzzy Field in Bristol.

They pushed across their first-inning runs on walks to Tom Luckner and Nick Nardone, a hit baseman (Mike Foley) along with RBI singles by Giacomo Brancato, Anthony Miller and Zach Weinstein and a sacrifice fly from C.J. Sabella. Maniscalco improved his record to 7-1 giving up a lone run in the first, while piching a six-hitter on four strikeouts and three walks. Brancato and Miller each had a pair of hits for the winners, while Sabella drove in two runs. After losing to Trumbull 17-3, during the regular season, the Mustangs have now beaten the Eagles twice, the last one coming in a 4-0 FCIAC championship performance. Warde has won eight straight games and has beaten three higher-ranked teams so far in the tournament. “It seems to happen every year (a low seed going deep in the Class LL tournament),” said Warde coach Mark Caron. “Hopefully, we’ll keep our hot streak going.”
