Trains moving again as bridge is closed

Friday, 8:23 p.m.: Rail service is back to normal on the New Haven after crews were able to close a bridge in Norwalk that had stuck open just before the Friday afternoon commute.

Friday, 4:23 p.m.: New Haven Line trains will operate in 2 segments during Friday afternoon’s commute: Grand Central to South Norwalk & East Norwalk to New Haven.

Teams of technicians from Metro-North have been unable to fully close the Walk Bridge, which was built in 1896 and swings open to allow marine traffic to pass, according to a statement from the railroad.

The MTA Bus Company will provide 24 buses from the Bronx to shuttle Metro-North customers between South Norwalk and East Norwalk via bus.  Trains will run in two sections: Between Grand Central Terminal and South Norwalk, and between East Norwalk and New Haven.

Train service between Stamford and Grand Central is not impacted. Trains in this segment of the New Haven Line will operate on normal schedules.

“Metro-North apologizes for the inconvenience and is working to restore full train service as quickly as possible,” according to the release. “Mechanics from Metro-North’s signals, track, structures, and overhead wire units are on scene to identify and fix the problem as quickly and safely as possible.”

Friday, 4:21 p.m.: Fairfield RTM member Michael Herley tweeted, “Can a weekday moratorium be put in place preventing the opening of SoNo bridge until it can close reliably?”

Friday, 3:35 p.m.: The Walk Bridge in Norwalk is stuck open, and Metro-North reports that trains cannot run in either direction between South Norwalk and East Norwalk as of 3:30 p.m. Friday.

Alternate transportation is being sought by the railroad, according to twitter.

Repairs are expected to take several hours, according to Metro-North.

Details will be posted as they become available.
