Sheets, Beradino leads Falcons vs Gaels

The Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe Coop boys volleyball team lost a 3-0 decision to host Shelton High in the first round of the Class L state tournament on June 3, at Murray Gymnasium.
Seeded sixth, the Gaels prevailed by scores of 25-19, 25-18, 25-23 over the 11th-seeded Fairfielders.
Mike Sheets led coach Garrett Covino’s Fairfield squad with eight kills and two blocks, while co-captain Tim Beradino added six kills and three blocks.
Guilherme Lima powered the defense with 18 digs and recorded a pair of aces.
Fairfield (8-11) rallied from a 20-12 deficit to get within a point at 23-22. After the teams traded serves, Grant Fevrier finished off the sweep for Shelton (14-7) with a searing kill through Fairfield’s defense.
Fairfield stayed close to the Gaels until late in both games one and two.
In game two, a kill from Erik Kocur and a block from Shelton’s Chris Pawlowski tied it up at 17. That sparked a 10-1 run by the Gaels to close it out, with Fairfield’s lone point coming on a hitting error from Pawlowski.
The first game saw Fairfield pull even at 17 on a Beradino spike, but Kocur countered with a kill to ignite a 8-2 Shelton flurry in the 25-19 victory.
