Sims, McKinney earn SCC scholar-athlete honors

Austin Sims and Matthew McKinney from Fairfield Prep have been named The SportsCenter of Connecticut/Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Athletes of the Month for April.
The SportsCenter of Connecticut/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month program, now in its eighth year, honors outstanding young men and women each month during the 2013-14 academic year.
Austin Sims
Sims is a four-year athlete in both soccer and lacrosse at Prep. He will conclude his academic career at Prep having taken eight honors level classes and two Advanced Placement courses, including four years of math at the honors level.
Sims is also a National Honors Society member. He has served the Prep community by his involvement in the Peer Tutor program and the local community through service by committing his athletic talents to volunteer programs at the Wakeman Boys & Girls Club and the local Jack & Jill organization.
Sims has been named to the Southern Connecticut Conference and All-State lacrosse team and will play lacrosse at Princeton University. He was recently named the 2014 SCC Boys Lacrosse Player of the Year.
Prep head lacrosse coach Chris Smalkais said, “Austin is the quintessential scholar-athlete, he has excelled in two varsity sports and in the classroom.”
Matthew McKinney
McKinney is a two-sport (ice hockey, tennis) standout and scholar-athlete at Prep. He has taken eight honors level and six Advanced Placement level courses, all available courses at the AP or Honors level. He has earned Honors level in all of his Prep years and High Honors for the past three.
McKinney serves the Prep community as a Peer Tutor and has contributed his volunteer efforts to the local community through Operation Hope in Fairfield, where he works in the food pantry and soup kitchen.
He is the No. 1 singles player on tennis team and was part of the state championship winning team in ice hockey.
Prep head varsity tennis coach Harold Prather said, “Matt is a leader by example both in the classroom and on the court.”
Student athletes who are selected must be a varsity letterwinner and have a 3.0/B average while demonstrating leadership qualities such as: being a positive role model; helping teammates overcome adversity; showing a commitment to self-improvement; or putting the needs of the team before themselves.
Sports Center of CT/SCC Scholar Athlete of the Month recipients and receive a certificate, commemorative tee-shirt and a SportsCenter of Connecticut activity pass.
“Many thanks to the Sports Center of Connecticut for its support of the SCC and the Scholar Athlete of the Month program,” said SCC Commissioner Al Carbone.
“This conference has been proud of its success for the last 20 years, and to be able to recognize outstanding young men and women who demonstrate the desire and ability to succeed solidifies what the SCC is all about.”
Founded in 1994, the Southern Connecticut Conference is in its 20th season of competition in 2013-14 with 22 member-schools and nearly 23,000 students. Recognized as the premier athletic league in the state of Connecticut, SCC member schools have captured 349 state championships since the league’s inception. More importantly, the SCC is recognized for its outstanding non-athletic programs and events, which attempt to break down barriers and build bridges of understanding to its students.
