Memorial Day Parade remembers Korea

Fairfield will honor the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, as well as the town’s 375th anniversary, during the annual Memorial Day Parade Monday, May 26.

The Korean War ended in 1954.

The Sea Ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 10 a.m. at South Benson Marina gas dock. Following the ceremony, a special dedication will be made in honor of David W. Russell, one of the founders of the ceremony.

Monday’s parade steps off at 10 a.m.

Marshals are Rolf Marx of Post 74, Peter Luzetsky of Post 143, Joe Lebinski of Post 9427 and Tim Kelly of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 19.

The master of ceremonies is Probate Judge Daniel F. Caruso.

Thomas Quinn of American Legion Post 143 is parade chairman.

Parade route

After beginning to assemble at the corner of the Post Road and South Pine Creek Road at 9, the parade will march east on the Post Road at 10 to the Main Branch of the Fairfield Library, then turn south on Old Post Road to Flint’s Corner, then east along Old Post Road, passing the Town Hall Green before disbanding at South Benson Road. Division 1 will start at South Pine Creek Road, Division 2 from Beaumont Street, and Division 3 will be split between Granville Street and Bungalow Avenue. Divisions will join the line of march when directed by their division commander.

All large floats and floats desiring to enter the float contest should assemble on the Post Road west of North Pine Creek Road by 8:45 a.m. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded.

No traffic will be allowed on the parade route, South Benson Road, or Beach Road south of the Post Road to Judson Road after 9:30 a.m. Monday. No through traffic will be permitted on South Pine Creek Road after 9 a.m.

No parking will be permitted on the parade route, or along South Pine Creek Road from St. Anthony’s Church to the Post Road.

Ceremony

At the ceremony, Katie Shannon, Fairfield Warde High School Band, will perform the national anthem and God Bless America.

The Rev. Judith Rhodes, rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, will deliver the invocation.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal will give the keynote address.

Rabbi Marcelo Kormis of Congregation Beth El will deliver the benediction.

American Legion Owen Fish Post 143 will fire the volley, and the Fairfield Warde Band will play taps.

Tim Kelly, Joseph Lebinski, Michael Mentes, Stephen Mentes, Terry Mentes, Milton Forstrom, Robert Barnum, Fred Coseglia, Cub Scout Pack 92, St. Thomas are on the Grave Decorating Committee.

Richard Barrett is sergeant at arms.

In the event of inclement weather, cancellation will be posted at fairfield-sun.com. There will be no rain date.
