Military gets into Fairfield museum for free

The Fairfield Museum and History Center will kick off the summer with its annual Memorial Day Community Picnic from noon to 3 p.m. Monday, May 26.

Launching on Memorial Day will be the Blue Star Museums program, a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, offering free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2014.

The museum is also joining more than 1,800 museums in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and American Samoa to participate in the Blue Star Program.

The afternoon will feature water balloon games, sack races, watermelon eating contests and a picnic with refreshments be sold by the Kiwanis Club of Fairfield and the Brick Oven Pizza Truck.

The Fairfield Museum will be open on Memorial Day, free of charge, from noon to 4 p.m.  The Museum Gift Shop boasts a new line of summer merchandise, including exclusive Fairfield 375th anniversary items for men, women and children, plus unique décor for the home.

Exhibitions  include “Images 2014,” the annual juried photography exhibition, and a solo exhibition by photographer David LaChapelle. Also on display is “Creating Community: Celebrating 375 Years of Our Past.”
