Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras play May 18

The Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras will perform the third concert of the 2013-14 season on Sunday, May 18, at 3 p.m. at the Klein Auditorium in Bridgeport. The concert will include performances by all six GBYO ensembles and will feature a performance by the GBYO 2014 Concerto Competition winner Jack Ullman of Fairfield playing the Grieg piano concerto.

In addition to Ullman, Fairfield residents performing May 18 are Diego Perez, Meghai Choudhary, Gerald Kim, Lidia Klein, Sofia Nangle, Freya Nangle, Joanne Park, Fahad Chowdhary, Michael Kutsch, Jen Evelyn Ng, Janise Park, Hannah Ulman, Kaitlyn Yoon, Lily Aston, Rohan Butani, Michael Chapin, Hadley Day, Akshitha Maddula, Pranav Mahesh, Sana Nagori, Angela Paraska, Jack Patterson, Shreya Sinha, Vincent Bartiromo, Kiera Jalkut, Srihita Mediboina, Samuel Soto, Dorrian Stangel, Alexandra Starovoitov, Connor Sullivan, Matthew Vogt, ChaeLim Yoon;

GBYO Music Director Christopher Hisey will conduct the Principal Orchestra in “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius, First movement of Grieg Piano concerto with Ullman solo piano, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony 2, “Little Russian.”

The Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Carrie Mascaro, will perform Rosamunde overture by Franz Schubert, The Titanic Medley by James Horner and Berceuse and Finale from “The Firebird Suite” by Igor Stravinsky.

Erica Messina will lead the Concert Orchestra in Overture to “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss. Theme from “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” by Howard Shore and “Fiesta Tropicale” arranged by Victor Lopez.

Conductor Aaron Lofaro and the String Orchestra will present “Spring” from the Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi, “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess by George and Ira Gershwin, “Viva La Vida” Coldplay and the Beach Boys Medley.

Brian Miller will lead the Wind Ensemble in March from Second Suite by Gistav Holst, theme from the Pirates of the Caribbean, and Bohemian Rhapsody.

The Jazz Ensemble under the leadership of Rex Cadwallader, will perform “Song For My Father” by Horace Silver, “ A Gentle Touch” by Paul Clark, “Buffalo Wings” by Mike Carubia.

The conductors are assisted by coaches Amy Hannequin, Enkelejda Hasani, Darilyn Manring, Brian Miller, Bruce Sloat, Carla Strauss and Jennifer Trahan.

More than 240 members in the five ensembles were chosen by competitive auditions in early fall and have been rehearsing since September in preparation for this concert.

Tickets for the May 18 concert are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, and may be purchased at the Klein Auditorium after 2 p.m. on the day of performance. Information about the GBYO can be found at gbyo.org.
