RTM member says Democrats listened to voters

To the Editor:

Last Tuesday night Republicans cut services that the voters need and want. They included Board of Education by $500,000; paving by $250,000; and our library by $75,000. If it weren’t for the Democrats, we would have lost two police cars as well. Democrats are protecting the best interests of Fairfielders, Democrats fight to keep Fairfield safe, Democrats fight to retain value, and Democrats fight for top quality schools and education. Democrats fight for all of Fairfield.

In the end, Republicans cut to save the average homeowner $43 a year.

Fairfield Democrats believe in a sensible budget policy that ensures that Fairfield continues to be a great place to raise a family, invest in property, and live in as a senior citizen. The budget that was proposed by First Selectman Michael Tetreau and passed by a Republican Majority on the Board of Finance represented such a sensible plan, and enjoyed bipartisan support.

Therefore, Fairfield Democratic RTM members could not in good conscience vote for the budget that Republicans forced through last night. The cuts in the budget passed by Republican RTM members cut services and only kick the can down the road when it comes to addressing public needs. What is worse, the cuts to the budget decrease important town services enjoyed by all segments of our population, such as the library, Health Department, and the paving of our roads. The cuts also impact our public schools, which are a major factor in keeping Fairfield a premier place to live.

And at 3:15 a.m., many hours after the fight began, ALL 16 members of the Democratic Caucus, battle weary and exhausted, were present and unified, honoring their word to voters by listening to the overwhelming majority of emails, phone calls and public comment to support the budget without further cuts. I recommend that RTM members who voted for these cuts to pay attention to what their constituents, on both sides of the aisle, want — instead of playing politics, with Fairfield’s future in the balance.”
