Thankful for Fairfield Public Library and its services

Many thanks to the Fairfield Public Library

To the Editor:

The Fairfield Public Main Library and Woods branch are crowning jewels in Fairfield. Residents are fortunate to have an institution known throughout the state, nationally and internationally recognized for innovation and programming.

As a service institution, our public library system efficiently, and in a financially responsible way, serves every demographic in Fairfield. Our residents pay approximately $200 per family per year for a suite of services worth far more — programs for adults, children, seniors and families; a top-notch collection of books, movies and music in a number of formats; programs and events with accomplished speakers, authors, artists and musicians; museum passes providing free or reduced access to museums around Connecticut and New York; a gathering place for the community that is safe, inviting and enriching.

The library represents government investment at its best, a way for a community to invest in something that returns back so much for so little. Moreover, the calculation does not measure the positive effect/economic impact on local businesses on both sides of town. The libraries bring people out and people together, who in turn, may visit local businesses nearby.

On my side of town, the Woods branch is particularly central to our neighborhoods. With fewer options for adults, families, seniors and children, we rely greatly on the Woods branch as a community gathering place.

In particular, the Teen downUNDER room is valued. Parents appreciate that students have a place to go with a professional librarian to lead them in wonderful activities, tutor, support their interests and ensure a positive social environment for them to interact.

I urge town officials to support the library’s budget in its entirety so that they may continue their excellent work in serving Fairfield.
