PHD eighth-graders capture title in Rhode Island

The PHD eighth-grade boys basketball team earned the Commotion by the Ocean Tournament crown.

The Premier Hoops Development (PHD) Program sent nine teams to Warwick (R.I,) to participate in the Commotion by the Ocean Tournament from May 2-4.
Through the course of the weekend the teams showed a lot of grit and stamina to compete with teams from Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.
Coach Ryan Swaller’s 8th Grade team competed in the 15U division going 3-0 and winning the championship.
Coach Drew Carothers 7th Grade team ended the weekend with a 3-1 record, finishing in second place.
In the semifinal game, they met a big and strong CT Defenders team. With the back-and-forth game tied with about six minutes to go, Jadyn Tabois hit a 3-pointer and on the next possession Evan Vishno completed a three-point play to put their team up six. PHD didn’t look back, winning 56-42.
Stephen Paolini finished with 15 points and Vishno with 13. The team came up short in the final, losing to a talented and athletic Rhode Island Kings team 58-76.
Coach Joe Black’s 5th grade team also had one of their best weekends so far this season. They ended up with a 2-1 record and finished in second place.
In their championship game, they were down 24 points in the second half and made a tremendous comeback which came up four points short in the end.
The remainding PHD teams were all right in the hunt of play, and as a program the final record amounted to 15-13.
