For the first time since the program was started by Drew Carothers and Jay Conway in 2009, the Fairfield-based Premier Hoops Development (PHD) team will play at Nationals.
Coached by Fairfield Warde’s head basketball coach Ryan Swaller and made up of eighth grade players who will likely be attending Ludlowe, Warde, Masuk of Monroe, Fairfield Prep and Kolbe Cathedral in Bridgeport, PHD finished the two-day tournament with a 4-1 record and were runners-up at the AAU Super Regional in New York.
“It’s an honor to get a chance to play against some of the best teams in the nation,” said Swaller.
On April 26, PHD went 2-0 against teams from Long Island, outscoring opponents 136-79. Malcolm Brune and Demetrius Robins led the attack.
On April 27, PHD returned to House of Sports where they defeated its first opponent of the day 55-40.
Earning the first-seed in their pool, PHD took on New Heights from Rye New York in the semifinals.
Receiving excellent play from Will Lucas and Cole ProwittSmith, PHD defeated New Heights 75-66 advancing to the championship game against House of Sports Elite.
The structure of the tournament made it so that PHD played three consecutive games, with very little time between, and fatigue played a large part as a one-point game slipped away in the final minutes and House of Sports went on to win 59-51.
The runner-up finish at the Super Regional earned PHD a trip to Nationals and the team will continue tournament play next weekend at Commotion by the Ocean in Warwick, Rhode Island.
“This is a very well rounded team with the ability play inside and out,” Swaller said. “If we continue to play the way we have been, we will have alot of success this season.”
