Anna Beatrice Clancy (1924-2014)

Nancy Clancy passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on April 13, 2014.

Nancy was born at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport, the second daughter of Patrick and Anna Coleman and grew up in The Hollow neighborhood, attending Saint Augustine grammar school, Central High School, Junior College of Connecticut and training at Saint Vincent’s Nursing School. She married John Clancy in 1950 and together they raised nine children.

Having lost her father shortly after she was born, Nancy grew up in a small, tight-knit Irish family with her mother and sister Peggy, with whom she enjoyed growing up in Bridgeport, traveling to New York, going on long car rides and sharing Mass with her cousin Fr. Eddie Kelly.

A proud graduate of Saint Vincent’s, she worked in the emergency room for many years, acquiring skills and supplies that she used for years with her own children and many others in the neighborhood.

Nancy and John eventually settled in Fairfield, where they raised their family, presiding over 18 graduations from St. Pius, Notre Dame of Fairfield and Fairfield Prep. She excelled at preparing comfort food, listening to Irish music, tending her garden and walking to daily Mass at Fairfield University. She spent countless evenings on her screened in porch with her husband, her children, a novel from the Fairfield Public Library, some chocolate, a cup of tea or a glass of wine.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents Patrick and Anna, husband John, sister Peggy and Peggy’s husband, Jake Donnelly. A devoted mother, grandmother, volunteer and friend, she is survived by her nine children, Colleen (Rodney Weiher), Maura, Jay (Merrill), Meghen (Ray Kellett), Sheila, Terry (Carol), Michael (Lauren), Patrick (Marsha) and Siobhan (Bob), 15 grandchildren – Evan, Bryanna, Kathleen, Melinda, Desmond, Connor, Jack, John, Emma, Coleman, Annie, Ian, Hallie, Forrest and Dallas, the Donnelly nieces and nephews, and good friends Beverly Cole and Marjorie Saint Fleur. She also leaves behind many friends and the professional, compassionate staff at The Watermark.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. directly at St. Pius X Church in Fairfield. Interment will follow in St. Michael’s Cemetery in Stratford.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you say a prayer and remember Nancy as you plant your gardens this spring.
