25th Bigelow Tea Community Challenge Sept. 30

The 25th annual Bigelow Tea Community Challenge — a 5K road race, 2-mile non-competitive fitness walk and a kids’ fun run — will take place Sunday, Sept. 30, rain or shine, at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club in Southport.

The event is open to the public. More than 1,000 participants of all ages are expected.

The Fun Run starts promptly at 9 a.m., followed by the 2-mile fitness walk at 9:30 and the 5K at 10:10.

An awards ceremony will begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. Prizes will be raffled shortly thereafter.

The Bigelow Tea Community Challenge, sponsored each year by the makers of “Constant Comment” and other fine teas, raised more than $100,000 last year and more than $800,000 since its inception.

All of the money raised will be distributed to Connecticut charities that include the Bridgeport Rescue Mission, Burroughs Community Center, Cardinal Shehan Center, Caroline House, Center for Women & Families, Connecticut Food Bank, Fairfield Senior Center, Fairfield YMCA, Grasmere by the Sea Eldercare Center, Janus House, Mercy Learning Center, Neighborhood Studios of Fairfield County, Norma Pfriem Breast Care Center, Operation Hope, Sandcastle Playground, and Wakeman Boys & Girls Club.

There are three ways to register:

• Online anytime at bigelowtea.com;

• On Saturday, Sept. 29, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Fairfield YMCA;

• On day of race at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club (registration table opens at 8 a.m.).

All registration fees will include a commemorative race T-shirt to the first 1,000 registrants, a gift bag, post-race refreshments and a chance to win one of several raffle prizes, including two round-trip airline tickets to anywhere in the continental US.

In celebration of the 25th anniversary, there will be a silent auction of signed sporting memorabilia donated by the New York Yankees.

Participants can also help support our local food bank by taking a non-perishable item on race day.
