Driver dies in crash on I-95 in Fairfield

Car drove under tractor trailer near northbound rest area early Sunday, March 30

Monday, March 31, 11:55 a.m.: The woman whose car became wedged under a tractor trailer and caught fire early Sunday is dead.

Fairfield Police confirmed Monday that the  27-year-old Bridgeport woman had died.

Published reports have identified the driver as Yvonne Sokol.

No report was on file at State Police Troop G as of 10 a.m. Monday

Sunday, March 30, noon: A driver suffered serious injuries when her car crashed under the back of a tractor trailer and caught fire early Sunday, March 30.

The woman had no pulse when she was freed from the car, the Fairfield Fire Department reported.

Engine 1, Ladder 1, Engine 2, Ladder 2, and Car 3 responded to a report of a crash on I-95 north near the rest area at 6:29 a.m. Company 1 and Car 3 arrived within five minutes and found a driver trapped inside a burning car that was stuck under a trailer.

Engine 1 immediately controlled the fire, according to Asst. Fire Chief Schuyler Sherwood. Extrication was initiated utilizing multiple hydraulic rescue tools. The fire department summoned Engine 4, the Westport Fire Department and Bud’s Towing with a heavy duty wrecker to lift the trailer off the car.

At least 24 emergency personnel worked to free the driver. Fire Chief Richard Felner was on scene during the entire operation as a liaison with the State Police.

American Medical Response arrived shortly after the fire department. State Police remained on the scene completing their investigation after the Fire Department left.

The Fairfield Fire Department remained on scene until about 8:30 a.m.
