Burglars targeting unlocked windows

In view of recent burglaries, police have warned residents about leaving house windows unlocked.

An alert posted on Facebook and tweeted by the department Tuesday, Sept. 11, cautioned: With cooler weather approaching, people tend to use their air conditioners less in favor of leaving their windows open. Fairfield Police would like to remind everyone to close and lock their first floor windows and doors when they leave their home, or go to bed at night. It is not uncommon for burglars to target homes with open windows at night, knowing that they can easily and quietly access valuables such as purses, often left in kitchen areas.

Some burglars are looking to the second floor for a way in.

A wallet and MacBook Pro computer were among $7,000 worth of items reported stolen from a Cricket Lane residence Sept. 9 around 9 p.m. A gold ring and a collection of Chinese stamps were also taken.

Police said entry may have been gained through a second-floor window, inaccessible without a ladder, although no ladder was found at the scene.

The burglary occurred between 7:10 and 8:40 p.m.

A short time later police checked a report of a man carrying a white sack running through yards.

A screen was removed from the back window of a Mill Plain Road residence, and a car parked there was rummaged through, sometime before 9:19 a.m. on Sept. 9. The resident told police a dog began parking around 5:30 a.m. and that something was heard in the yard.

A Dunnlea Road resident visited police Sept. 10 around 8:30 a.m. to report that $35 in cash was stolen from a pocketbook left inside the house. A kitchen screen had been pushed in, and the purse had been in plain view through that window, police said.

The theft was discovered Sept. 9 at 7 a.m. Cash was taken, but credit cards were left in the purse.
