Post Road reopened after fire in Fairfield

Stores closed during smoky fire at Engravers World Thursday

A smoky fire closed the Post Road downtown Thursday afternoon. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters were called shortly before noon to investigate heavy smoke billowing from Engravers World, 1555 Post Road. Fire Chief Richard Felner said the first engine found heavy smoke coming from the back of the store when the blaze was reported at 11:45 a.m. Fire and tremendous amounts of smoke was coming from the back of the store, at 1555 Post Road, when firefighters arrived.

Felner said one person was inside Engravers World at the time, and was safely able to get out. The cause of the fire was not known when Felner addressed the media at the scene.

Michael Murren, owner of Murren Insurance directly across the street from Engravers World said the amount of smoke coming from the store was “mind boggling.”

“It was just incredible,” Murren said. “The smoke was just pouring out of there, billowing and billowing. The odor permeated everything. People will be smelling this fire for a while.”

Fire officials said Engravers World and Fairfield Clothiers, located next door, both sustained extensive fire and water damage.

All hands in Fairfield were summoned to the scene, joined by firefighters from Westport and Bridgeport downtown. Firefighters from Norwalk were staffing Fairfield Fire Headquarters.

The Post Road was closed from Reef Road to Ruane Street. Sherman Street, which runs parallel to the Post Road behind the former Fairfield Store, was partially blocked to allow a hose from a hydrant to be stretched to the back of Engravers World.

Businesses surrounding the building were closed, including Wells Fargo Bank, Banana Republic, the Fairfield University Downtown Bookstore and Chef’s Table. Fairfield Clothiers is in the same building as Engravers World, a Pilates studio upstairs.

Updates will be posted as they become available
