The Junior Women’s Club of Fairfield presented an $11,000 check to The Cardinal Shehan Center on Feb. 19. The donation is a result of the club’s annual fund-raiser, “A Visit to Santa’s House,” which took place in Fairfield in December.

A week later, on Feb. 26, a second donation in the amount of $2,000 was presented to Al’s Angels, a local non-profit organization providing gifts and meals to sick children.

JWC chose the Cardinal Shehan Center as its 2014 charitable partner, and lent its name to develop the “JWC Girls Zone,” a section of the center devoted to girls ages 11 to 17. Although the monetary donation is essential to supporting the JWC Girls Zone, the opportunity for hands-on interaction and mentoring is what attracted the club to the program.

Club members already spent an evening at the JWC Girls Zone in November, preparing craft materials for “A Visit to Santa’s House.” Upcoming visits will focus on topics pertaining to all young women, including how to dress for success; building skills for the future such as prep school/college applications, interviews and resume writing; and the importance of proper nutrition and healthy cooking.

“Our club, numerous community volunteers and each Santa’s House visitor came together last December to enjoy the holiday spirit and support two very deserving local organizations,” said Jennifer Hinkle, Santa’s House co-chair and JWC co-president. “We are thrilled to award the Cardinal Shehan Center and Al’s Angels with proceeds of an event that has become a beloved holiday tradition for families in Fairfield and its neighboring towns.”

“The Cardinal Shehan Center is grateful to be selected as the partner organization with the Junior Women’s Club of Fairfield,” said Terence O’Connor, executive director of the Cardinal Shehan Center. “Funding will support our JWC Girls Zone Program which helps young girls deal with issues affecting them.”
