Wikman's overtime goal advances Prep to title game

Matt Wikman scored at 5:45 of overtime to carry the Fairfield Prep hockey team to a 4-3 overtime victory over Notre Dame-West Haven in the Division I state semifinals at Ingalls Rink in New Haven on Wednesday night.
Coach Matt Sather’s third-seeded Jesuits (22-3-1) will play fourth-seeded Darien High (20-2-1) at Ingalls Rink at 2 p.m. Saturday in the title game. The Blue Wave defeated top-seeded Notre Dame-Fairfield, 3-1, in their semifinal.
Prep took a 1-0 lead on Dean Lockery’s goal at 6:09 of the first, with Wikman assisting.
The lead grew to 2-0 on Ryan Deering’s tally off a Bryan Connell assist at 8:47 of the second.
Second-seeded Notre Dame (15-4-3) got on the board with a Kyle Lynch goal at 1:04 of the third, but Prep’s Will Schlichtig, from Deering, restored the two-goal lead at 3:41.
The Green Knights’ Ryan Lynch scored at 8:34 and then at 12:44 to tie the game at the end of regulation.
Matt Beck had 26 saves for Prep and Wade Conlan made 37 saves for Notre Dame.
