The National Charity League now has a new chapter in Fairfield. The organization fosters mother-daughter relationships in a philanthropic organization committed to community service, leadership development and cultural experiences.

Membership in NCL gives mothers and daughters opportunities to strengthen their bond while growing together, sharing of themselves and improving their communities.

Approximately 67 Fairfield mothers joined the NCL’s Fairfield chapter, along with their 89 daughters in seventh through 12th grades. The Fairfield chapter is in its inaugural year and meets monthly, except during the summertime.

The first meeting was held in August and attended by more than 100 new members. At the kickoff meeting, Donovan Green, who is Dr. Oz’s personal trainer, gave the girls tools on self-defense and anti-bullying behavior. Past monthly meetings have included presentations from clinical psychologist/adolescent consultant Dr. Barbara Greenburg and Stephanie Klein Wassink of Winning Applications on college applications best practices.

Future speakers include a representative from Bigelow Tea; Dr. Myrna Haskell, syndicated columnist and author of Lions Tigers and Teens; and Dara Chadwick, freelance journalist and author of the book, You’d Be So Pretty If… Teaching Our Daughters To Love Their Bodies Even When We Don’t Love Our Own.

The daughters who joined NCL are represented by many local schools, including Fairfield Woods Middle School, Roger Ludlowe Middle School, Tomlinson Middle School, Fairfield Ludlowe High School, Fairfield Warde High School, Hopkins School, Lauralton Hall, Our Lady of Fatima, St. Luke’s School, St. Thomas Aquinas School, Sacred Heart Academy, Unquowa School and Wooster School.

The 156 mother and daughter members have chosen to support five local organizations, including the Cardinal Shehan Center, Connecticut Challenge Center for Survivorship, Connecticut Audubon Society, Special Olympics of Connecticut and Fairfield Museum and History Center, by providing weekly and monthly volunteers for their many programs.
