Boys basketball: Prep wards off Wilbur Cross in SCC semis

Freshman Patrick Harding’s basket with 2:21 left snapped a 62-all tie and propelled Fairfield Prep to a 75-71 victory over Wilbur Cross in the SCC semifinals at East Haven High.

Harding, who came on after center Paschal Chukwu fouled out with 5:14 left to play, gave the top-seeded Jesuits the lead for good by burying a baseline jumper. Prep knocked down 11-of-16 free throws to keep the fourth-seeded Governors at bay down the stretch, but the Governors (16-5) had a chance to potentially tie the game after Keith Pettway missed the back end of  a two-shot foul with 20.7 seconds left.

Cross then failed to advance the ball over the timeline, as Thomas Nolan came up with a steal in the backcourt. He then made one of two from the stripe with 5.5 seconds left to send Prep (22-0) into the final, where they will tangle with third-seeded Hillhouse High on Wednesday night at Quinnipiac University’s TD Bank Sports Center at 7 p.m.

Hillhouse defeated Prep, 53-47 in overtime, in last year’s SCC final. The Academics (18-4) are making their sixth consecutive finals’ appearance and 12th overall. Hillhouse downed No. 2 seed Career Magnet, 63-47, in the other semifinal. Prep reached the championship game in 2013 and 1995.

Nolan led Prep with 26 points against Cross and Pettway added 19. Ryan Foley chipped in 13 points and Chukwu, saddled with foul trouble early on, had 11.

Chan Williams-Bey paced the Governors with 24 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter. Backcourt mate Josh Fleming scored 21, knocking down five 3-pointers, and Robert Durant, Jr. tossed in 13 points.
