Children’s Scrabble runs through Dec. 13 at Pequot Library

The Pequot Library is forming a Scrabble Club for children in grades 4-8. All levels, including beginners, are welcome.

Scrabble starts Thursday, Sept. 20, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and lasts 12 sessions through Dec. 13.

Coach and nationally ranked player Cornelia Guest has been teaching School Scrabble in the Fairfield area since 2004. A tournament Scrabble player herself, she has taken 40 teams of fourth through eighth graders to national tournaments in the past five years and has had more students finish in the top 10 than any other coach (her teams have won more than $25,000).

A director of the North American Scrabble Players Association, she has run more than 100 tournaments for all ages, including the annual New England School Scrabble Championship. She also is the publisher of the online Scrabble e-newsletter The Last Word (thelastwordnewsletter.com).

“I’m best known for my students who compete nationally,” Guest said. “However, the majority of my students play just for fun. While parents may appreciate that their children are learning vocabulary and practicing math, the kids are just having a great time getting together with friends and playing Scrabble.”

Registration is encouraged at pequotlibrary.org or 203-259-0346, ext. 18. The Pequot Library is also on Facebook.
