Wrestling: Prep eighth at SCCs

Nick Crowle was runner-up at 285, leading the Fairfield Prep wrestling team to an eighth-place finish at the SCC Tournament held at Shelton High on Saturday afternoon.

Xavier won the team title for the third time in a row, piling up 224 team points on the strength of 12 place-winners. Daniel Hand of Madison (103.5 points), Foran High (85), Shelton (84.5) and Amity (84) rounded out the top five. Prep collected 46 team points, behind Branford (52.5) and ahead of East Haven (38.5). The SCCs were canceled last year due to inclement weather.

Crowle, the top seed at heavyweight, was pinned by Notre Dame’s Camilo Vangas in 1:22. The seniors battled for position, with the second-seeded Vangas gaining the upper hand and the fall with 38 seconds left in the opening period.

Jack Bosken was third at 152, notching a 17-1 technical fall over Ricky Krazter of Foran High in the third-place bout. David Martens took third at 220, pinning Foran’s Ben Croll in 3:37.
