Warde wins wild overtime game with Ludlowe

Giacomo Brancato made a a tough shot on Fairfield Warde’s last possession in regulation to force overtime at 40-40, and the Mustangs went on to defeat Fairfield Ludlowe 47-46 before a large and boisterous home crowd on Tuesday night.
The sixth tie in the game (46-46) came on two Chad Peterson free throws for Ludlowe with 33 seconds remaining in the extra session.
Warde had three tries at the go-ahead basket on its next trip, with Brian Kerrigan being fouled on his second shot in the sequence.
With 5.1 on the clock, Kerrigan missed the first but made the second to give Warde a 47-46 lead.
Ludlowe went to Peterson, but after he recovered a loose ball in the right corner and the clock winding down, the junior’s shot found only rim as the Warde fans stormed the court.
“I told them when we were down four with a minute left we needed two defensive stops,” Swaller said after the Mustangs improved to 2-13. “Then we had two good offensive possessions.”
Ludlowe coach John Dailey said:
“We expected a good game and we picked the worst time to play our worst first half of the season (Warde led 24-15 at the half).
“We dug ourselves a little hole, but got back in it. We had the lead and Brancato made a great play at the end of regulation.”
Nick Cotto led Warde with 21 points and Brancato scored 16.
Peterson scored 11 points and Mark Malone nine for Ludlowe (4-11).
Ludlowe was 18-for-23 from the foul line. Warde was 13-for-26 from the stripe.
