Fairfielders keeps town government spending on rise

To the Editor:

Congratulations are in order to all in Fairfield who have committed to paying property taxes year upon year by owning real property in town. That, of course, does not include our current First Selectman, Michael Tetreau, who is still not committed to our town and who just pays to rent a small place to hang his hat here while he collects his pay and accrues time for his big government pension pay-out.

If you read beyond the press release you will see that the bond rating agencies, who get a fee from Tetreau for publishing their report on town government’s credit worthiness, continue to give our bonds (borrowing) a high rating almost entirely because of the great “revenue stream” that just keeps  on coming and coming from taxes levied by the Board of Finance on our real property year upon year.

The little bit about “strong financial management” in Fairfield, added to the report at Tetreau’s request, is like saying Brigitte Bardot has a great singing voice. That great “revenue stream” is all about those of us who will pay property taxes no matter what.

One writer recently noted that the “ATM is empty” when referring to the taxpayers’ ability to pay more taxes. The fact is the ATM is jam packed with money as it is backed up by the value of every piece of real property in town.

While ever-increasing taxes do lower the relative value of our properties in town, just as the ever-increasing growth in the property crime rate is lowering them too, that is of no concern right now to the rating agencies as they know the bondholders still have plenty of room suck us dry.

Nice job guys. The next quarterly tax payment is due on April 1, All Fools Day. Keep up the good work, Fairfield, but do not be played for fools on Fairfield’s big mismanagement problem. The problem is real and it is bigger than all of us.
