Batulanon wins fourth Invitational title

The Falcons’ Ben Batulanon at 120 pounds, won a Fairfield Ludlowe Wrestling Invitational title for the fourth time and captured the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award on Dec. 21.
Coach Nick Garrofolo’ Ludlowe team placed second with 207 points to Newtown High’s 286 points. Fairfield Prep was sixth (119 points).
Ludlowe had three champs and six finalists, while Newtown had five champions and seven finalists.
Sophomore Austin Sherman at 106 and sophomore Marcus Sherrod at 126 also took home titles for the Falcons.
Junior George Wales at 113, sophomore Bobby Clark at 132 and sophomore Chase Lind at 152 placed second.
Other place winners for Ludlowe were junior Konstantin Suvorov (third at 145), senior Eric Kirchgasser (fourth at 113) and Austin Reid (sixth at 138).
“Batulanon had a great tournament and won 2-0 against Ed Lovely from Newtown in the finals, with a third-period reversal,” Garoffolo reported.
“Austin Sherman dominated his weight class and won 7-4 against Tom Leuci of Newtown and was in control the whole match.
“Marcus Sherrod also had a very strong performance, winning 6-3 against Mike Calvo of New Britain.
“We wrestled very well, but Newtown was a more solid team. The Fastest Fall winner was Connor Miele from Windsor with four pins at 126 pounds in 5:11.”
Prep was led by Nick Crowle, who pinned New Britain’s Patrick Malchar in 1:00 to win the heavyweight title.
Kevin Zentner placed third at 106 pounds, with a 7-6 decision over Harding’s Amir Phipps.
Mike Russo placed fourth at 120 pounds, Robert Fumai was fourth at 195 pounds, Matt Freed was fifth at 132 pounds with a 53-second pin and Jack Bosken was fifth at 152 pounds via a 44-second fall.
