Warde Invitational draws strong field

Some of the best high school wrestling in Connecticut will be on display when Fairfield Warde High hosts the Warde Invitational Wrestling Tournament on. Jan. 4.
Nearly 200 wrestlers from 16 teams in Connecticut and New York will kick off the New Year with a wrestling extravaganza. The tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. and matches will continue throughout the day until champions in more than a dozen weight classes are crowned at approximately 5 p.m.
Tickets are available at the door: $3 for adults, children under 12 years of age free.
The Warde grapplers will look to defend their tournament title in what has come to be known as one of the best and most competitive high school wrestling tournaments in the state.
The Mustangs are looking to better their 2012-13 season, when they finished 20-2, were Class L state runners-up and FCIAC East champions for the 8th consecutive season.
Warde has won the Class L state title three times under coach Jason Shaughnessy, and is expected to compete for both the FCIAC and state titles again this year.
