Fairfield firefighters extinguish morning fire

Fairfield firefighters fight Judd Street fire.

The Fairfield Emergency Communication Center received a call today, Dec. 17, at 8:28 a.m., reporting a fire at 118 Judd St.

Fairfield Fire Engines 1, 2, 3 and 4, Ladders 1 and 2, and Car 3 responded, with Car 3 arriving on the scene at 8:32, confirming a working fire and calling for a full assignment.

Engine 2 and Ladder 2 were on scene within a minute and stretched a hose line to the second floor, knocking down the fire which was confined to a rear study. As additional units arrived they were assigned to ventilate the building and assist AMR in checking the occupants for possible smoke inhalation.

Fire Chief Richard Felner, Fire Marshal Bill Kessler and electrical official Tom Conley were also on scene, with Westport and Bridgeport fire departments providing mutual aid resources to cover Fairfield Fire Stations 1 and 2. Assistant Chief Schuyler Sherwood, who served as incident commander in Car 3, reported a recall at 8:42, with Engine 2 last to clear the scene an hour later at 9:44.

“The aggressive attack by our fire department minimized property loss,” Sherwood said. “My aide did a quick recon and determined that the homeowners were on the back porch, which allowed us to give our full attention to containing and extinguishing the fire.”

While the area of origin has been determined, the fire cause remains under investigation by the fire marshal’s office.

“The homeowner’s presence of mind in closing the door of the fire room and getting out of the house limited the spread of fire and further damage to the structure,” Kessler said.
