Mercy Learning Center holds holiday tea

Beth Davis and her Fairfield student attend one of Mercy Learning Center’s holiday teas.

To celebrate the season of giving, Mercy Learning Center hosted holiday tea parties for more than 250 of its volunteer literacy tutors, and their adult education students.

These parties, held Dec. 3 through 6, celebrate the students’ educational accomplishments and thank the dedicated tutors and volunteers for their gift of time and talent.

Donations of tea and gift mugs were provided by R.C. Bigelow, and the many sandwiches and desserts were donated by The National Charity League of Westport. A gift raffle and caroling sing-a-long was organized by the center’s Tutor Coordinator Lynn Gabriel and Student Enrichment Coordinator Nora Jinishian.

Mercy Learning Center’s students come from more than 51 countries, and students and tutors both shared how they celebrate the holiday season in their own culture. Family, music and special meals are the common traditions among our diverse backgrounds. Coming together to share in friendship, food and singing at the holiday teas is a tradition at the center.

“The holiday teas are always a lovely way to begin the festive season,” Jinishian said. “It’s an opportunity for students to share their different holiday traditions with each other, and it gives us the opportunity to emphasis the importance of family.”
